The diamond
The word diamond is derived from the Greek word adamas that means unbreakable. There is no doubt that of all the gems available, the diamond is the one that is most brilliant, sparkling, and popular. This is not just today, but from as early as 20,000 BC that the use of diamonds have been documented. A radiant brilliant cut diamond sparkles and shines makes it appear like a jewel on fire. The unique sparkling properties of the diamond is what makes it preferred for use in jewellery, especially for the engagement ring.
A round brilliant cut diamond is one of the most preferred gemstones used in rings, necklaces, and earrings. Diamond is one of the most expensive jewellery items, more than gold. The brilliant properties that this stone possesses are what makes it so costly and yet so preferred. Women especially love diamonds, it is said that diamonds are a girl’s best friend.
History of the diamond
Diamonds have been found in India even before the 3rd century BC and there are many texts that mention the use of diamonds. The early Romans have also used diamonds as per history. In modern times, it was Brazil which first mined diamonds. This happened in 1725. But the modern diamond originated from South Africa. That is where the round brilliant cut diamond has its origin. The first diamond was mined in South Africa in 1886.
In a period of 40 years, more than 2,000 kilograms of diamonds were mined in South Africa. The leading diamond company De Beers, known for the radiant brilliant cut diamond was formed in South Africa. When it comes to trading, Belgium is well-known for trading in diamonds. More than 50% of diamonds are traded here.
The 21st century saw the origin of factory produced diamonds. The round brilliant cut diamond could now be produced synthetically. These diamonds look almost similar to the real ones and are popular. From thousands of year, the diamond has proved to be the most coveted gemstones. 100 tonnes of synthesized and 20 tonnes of mined diamonds are produced every year.
